All the Vercetti hype that existed before the match had certainly died down to a deafening silence by the time this once-debated match took place. Everyone knew that Vercetti was overrated going in, and it was about time we saw just how much. Remember, many people expected Vercetti to win this match with ease before the contest started.

As you can see, no such thing came close to happening. Mega Man pummeled Vercetti into the ground from start to finish en route to a fairly easy doubling, though Mega was a far cry off from the days when he was flirting with 90% and coming close to beating elites in every match. Still, a doubling over a character that many once thought could beat you is still impressive, and it made for a nice tune-up going into his match with Solid Snake and eventual possible rematch with Sephiroth in the Final Four.

People were more reasonable with Vercetti's stock after he bombed in 2003, though most were smart enough to not have him making it past Mega Man. Had Donkey Kong pulled off the upset, Vercetti would have gone down as a much bigger bust than history shows. Vercetti has been in both contests since this one, but he was never able to live up to what people first expected of him.

With that, the final week of the contest was upon us! The Elite 8 all being 1 and 2 seeds was a crime, but there were some very interesting matches coming up. People have wanted Link/Samus for two years, there was still talk of Sonic upsetting Cloud, Mario/Sephy was guaranteed to be huge, and Snake still had a chance at beating Mega Man.

The funny thing about this final week were all of the people claiming that Mario/Crono symbolized the end of this contest when it came to excitement. What a difference seven days can make.
