Nintendo's long running strategy RPG series, and the progenitor of that genre. The Fire Emblem series spans thirteen games, with more on the way. The series is known for its harsh gameplay, in particular, the permanent death of characters who fall in battle. The first six games were released only in Japan, but fan translation patches in various stages of completion have rendered most of them playable in English.
The series defeated Silent Hill, before a respectable loss to Metal Gear Solid in the 2007 Series contest. The seventh title in the series lost to Final Fantasy Tactics Advance in the 2004 Games contest.
Basically, it's the most cult game in Nintendo's history, and the only reason we know it exists is because of Smash Bros. End of story.
