KHF was all the rage in 2003

Kingdom Hearts Factor is the theory most often advanced to explain the massive Square Boost between the 2002 and 2003 Summer Contests. The idea is that Disney's influence exposed Square characters such as Cloud, Sephiroth, and Squall to an entirely new audience, many of whom might have been interested enough to pick up older Square offerings like Final Fantasy 7.

Characters Affected[]

Based on 2002 - 2003 X-Stats (which hold Link to be constant at 50%)

  • Cloud: 37.39% (8th place after loss to Mario) to 51.61% (1st place after victory over Link)
  • Sephiroth: 43.35% (2nd place after loss to Link) to 49.71% (3rd place after loss to Cloud)
  • Squall: 24.36% (20th place after loss to Snake) to 31.72% (16th place after loss to Samus)
