From Board 8 Wiki

(Redirected from Leonhart)

This article relates to Leonhart the B8 poster. For the video game character of the same name, see Squall.

Leonhart4 is an average Board 8 member. He is known best for his NCAA Season Character Contest, where Locke Cole beat Bowser in the finals. He is a frequent contributor to the Stats Topic. He ran the Nomination Rally Tournament in 2005, 2007, and 2009, and he finished the 2006 Nomination Rally when Slowflake abandoned it late in the contest.

Favorite Characters:

25. Terry Bogard (Fatal Fury) - BUSTA WOLFE! And the hat throw is just smooth. Plus, he’s cool in the anime…

24. Chun-Li (Street Fighter) - She’s fun as all get out to play as in SFIII, and I actually dig the strange attire, even the hair buns.

23. Frog (Chrono Trigger) - He has one of the best music themes in video games, a character whose backstory I like and sympathize, and his rivalry with Magus is awesome.

22. Sub-Zero (Mortal Kombat) - He’s the best of the Mortal Kombat ninjas because he wears blue, and freezing enemies and nailing them while they’re defenseless is priceless. Plus, nothing is more humiliating than walking into his ground freeze in Mortal Kombat II.

21. Tifa Lockhart (Final Fantasy VII) - Far from perfect as a character (Her hesitance to speak the truth to Cloud was a big mistake), but her devotion and care for Cloud endears me to her. I still insist she’s Cloud’s true love.

20. Protoman (Mega Man) - He has one of my favorite character designs in any video game. There’s not much to him, but there’s that sense of mystery and intrigue emanating from him that just makes him so appealing. He’s just so…cool.

19. Diddy Kong (Donkey Kong Country) - Donkey Kong Country 2 is one of my favorite games ever, cartwheels are awesome, and the stars on the red shirt are class.

18. Auron (Final Fantasy X) - The stereotypical RPG bad boy on the surface, Auron actually has a caring side and a strong sense of honor. Not going to lie that his awesome quotes, awesome Overdrives, and awesome character design go a long way.

17. Locke Cole (Final Fantasy VI) - He has one of the best-looking sprites in a game ever, if not the best. And despite not being one of the more useful characters in battle, I always have him in my party whenever he’s available. Plus, vowing to protect Celes and Terra (even if the latter didn’t deserve it) out of guilt for Rachel and the final scene with Rachel are great.

16. Cloud Strife (Final Fantasy VII) - I won’t lie. Omnislashing Sephiroth in the final battle is one of my favorite moments in a video game. Cloud’s amnesia may drive some people crazy, but it’s actually one of the reasons I like him so much. The part where Tifa dives into his memories is actually one of my favorite parts of the game.

15. Roxas (Kingdom Hearts II) - For a guy with no heart and supposedly no emotions, he drew a great deal of sympathy from me. The guy was basically in a no-win situation. No matter which side he chose, all they wanted to do was use him for what he was, and in the end, he really had no choice. “You make a good other” is a cool quote, too.

14. Clank (Ratchet & Clank) - He’s hilarious, has a great character design, and the scenes where you get to play as him are some of the best moments in the series. Oh, and Secret Agent Clank owns your soul.

13. Revolver Ocelot (Metal Gear Solid) - One of the most brilliant masterminds in gaming, causing enough plot twists to make your head explode. His “This is the greatest handgun ever made” speech is one of my favorite speeches in a game. Patric Zimmerman makes Ocelot as awesome as he is. Well, him and the hand gesture.

12. Presea Combatir (Tales of Symphonia) - Anyone who can emasculate Lloyd and Genis upon the first meeting is worthy of a high ranking in my book, as does anyone who dresses up as Klonoa. Presea’s character design is adorable, and I find myself sympathizing with her because of what happened to her. Plus, she has some of the most awesome skits, such as when Lloyd lets her use the Sorcerer’s Ring.

11. Balthier Bunansa (Final Fantasy XII) - I consider this guy to be the video game equivalent of Han Solo. He’s just so smooth and unflappable, and I love the “Leading man” gimmick. Plus, his relationship with his father was one of the best relationships Square has ever done.

10. Ryu (Street Fighter) - The standard for all fighting game characters, and the standard, uhhh…standard fighting game character. Despite being seemingly average all-around, I really enjoy playing as Ryu. Admittedly, he’s one-dimensional, but I like his role as the wandering warrior who only cares about the fight.

9. Vyse the Legend (Skies of Arcadia) - Another character who, admittedly, is not very deep, but his unwavering determination and nothing-is-impossible attitude are enough to win me over. Oh, and Pirates’ Wrath is awesome.

8. Phoenix Wright (Ace Attorney) - Unexpected alert! Seriously though, I love Phoenix Wright for much of the same reasons I love Vyse: His unwavering determination and faith in his clients, and his nothing-is-impossible attitude, even when he’s staring impossible in the face. Plus, Phoenix Wright makes me laugh like few other characters can do. “Wait a second…That testimony stinks!” and “Witness! You can’t just say ‘Hello’ and expect us to get anywhere! I want you to testify!” are highlight quotes for me.

7. Ramza Beoulve (Final Fantasy Tactics) - Wow, three characters in a row I love for basically the same reason. Ramza also has another quality that puts him above the other two: His integrity, meaning that he will do whatever is right, no matter what the cost. He knew he wasn’t going to receive any praise, reward, or honor for what he did, but he did it anyway because it was right. That was what impressed me most about him.

6. Knuckles the Echidna (Sonic the Hedgehog) - Despite Sega’s attempts to relegate Knuckles to the realm of uselessness, I will always love him for the 2-D Sonic games alone. Playing as him, gliding, breaking through walls, and going places Sonic could only dream of was awesome. And despite the fact that there was no dialogue, the scene between Sonic and Knuckles in the Hidden Palace Zone still manages to be epic.

5. Kirby (Kirby Series) - Kirby games are a blast to play, as is taking the powers of your enemies and using them yourself. I personally enjoy Kirby powers far more than Mega Man powers because they’re much more diverse and more fun all around. Plus, Kirby is just a blast to play as in Smash Brothers, and copying Snake in Brawl is one of the best things ever to appear in any video game, seriously.

4. Luigi (Super Mario Brothers) - I’ve always liked Luigi more than Mario, even when there was absolutely no difference between the two other than color. And, like Sega with Knuckles, despite all of Nintendo’s attempts to turn Luigi into an unlikable coward, he still manages to be hilarious in the Mario RPGs. Luigi’s just one of those characters you don’t need a reason to love.

3. Solid Snake (Metal Gear) - Solid Snake is the man who makes the impossible possible. If you can’t tell, guys who somehow manage to overcome seemingly impossible situations by sheer will alone score high marks in my book. And anyone who says they don’t like Snake for being a hardcore bad boy is lying (or just weird, I guess). He has some of the most awesome quotes in gaming.

2. Tidus (Final Fantasy X) - I went into Final Fantasy X knowing nothing more than the basics. Because of that, I learned as Tidus learned, and I grew attached to him because of this. That’s what made the ending all the more powerful for me. And I’m going to go against the majority in saying that I thought J.A. Taylor was perfect for Tidus, and the laughing scene falls under the category of “So bad it’s good” for me. I still laugh every time I watch it.

1. Squall Leonhart (Final Fantasy VIII) - Squall had me from the beginning, with the awesome opening FMV. Getting inside of Squall’s mind was brilliant, I thought. It added a new dimension to his character that would be sorely lacking otherwise. Seeing all of the subtleties with his character and watching him develop, change, and open up over the course of the game is awesome. Squall’s character design is awesome, and Lion Heart is awesome. Overall, Squall is, was, and probably always will be my favorite character.
